The Breakthrough
The Great Breakthrough occurred approximately 250 years before the start of the story. The Break Through was the event of the overworlders digging a tunnel directly into the underworld. This opened a land bridge between the two worlds, where beforehand the worlds were only connected by the volcanoes and a few "bottomless pits" where the underworld could only be reached by either falling and somehow not dying, or by flying creatures.

Prior to the Great Breakthrough, there was a mining competition between several different nations, where different countries were mining deep in their respective countries. They were mining deep, in order to get access to more plentiful sources of grundsten, which occurs more frequently the deeper the mine, as well as other precious jewels and metals. The country that broke through was Croulia, who broke through in their Mt. Styxa. Following the Breakthrough, the other countries stopped their deep digging, in fear that they would also inadvertently create land bridges to the underworld as well.

Following the Great Breakthrough, four wars occurred of various lengths, the Premiere, Deuxieme, Troisieme, and Quatrieme Demon Wars.
The Quatrieme Demon War
The Quatrieme Demon War ended 45 years before the beginning of the story. It began in the year 156 AGB (After the Great Breakthrough). The war was particularly noteworthy, because, for the first time, the demons broke through to the surface, and conquered the city of Styxa near the mouth of the tunnel. All of the previous wars had taken place exclusively in the tunnels leading down into the underworld.
The city of Styxa remained under the control of the demons for nine years. Following the retaking of Styxa, the war continued for another twenty years, until there was a standstill. The standstill was caused because of a tunnel collapse. During a large battle, a tunnel was dug underneath the main battlefield to flank the demon army. However, the tunnel was unstable, and it collapsed. This caused a massive trench to be made across the battlefield, as well as killing a thousand people in its collapse. The trench was widened to make a permanent divide between the two armies, and fortresses were constructed on either side to create a permanent stalement between the two sides.
